Racism threatens the lives and rights of billions of people around the world. Despite outlawing racial discrimination through a multilateral treaty in 1965, governments continue to perpetuate and permit racism—and individuals continue to commit racist acts with impunity. Eliminating racism remains an unrealized promise of universal human rights. Though more and more people today are educating themselves about racism, education alone is insufficient. In this talk Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Anna Spain Bradley, a legal scholar and human rights advocate, will critically engage how education can address racism in the United States and abroad. What role must educators play in shaping a less racist future?

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Anna Spain Bradley became vice chancellor for equity, diversity and inclusion at UCLA on September 1, 2020. She serves as UCLA’s senior campus official responsible for leading and implementing measures to promote an inclusive and equitable campus environment for all students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community partners. Together with the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion team, Vice Chancellor Spain Bradley works to affirm a campus culture based on UCLA’s core values. She is passionate about promoting equity, diversity, inclusion, and human dignity for all.
An expert in international law and human rights, Vice Chancellor Spain Bradley’s current research imagines global mechanisms to address racism and promote human rights. She serves as a legal expert to the United Nations on these matters and is the author of Global Racism (Oxford University Press, forthcoming) and Human Choice in International Law (Cambridge University Press, 2021) in addition to numerous other scholarly publications. Prior to joining UCLA, Vice Chancellor Spain Bradley served as Assistant Vice Provost for Faculty Development and Diversity (2017-2020) and a Professor of Law at the University of Colorado (2009-2020). She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a member (and former Executive Council member) of the American Society of International Law, and sits on the Academic Council of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration. In 2018, she was one of four educators in the nation to receive the OZY Educator Award. She earned her J.D. from Harvard Law School and her B.A. from Denison University. Spain Bradley is a frequent keynote speaker for a variety of audiences.
ABOUT THE MODERATOR
Cindy Fan is UCLA’s Vice Provost for International Studies & Global Engagement, and is the first woman and Asian American to hold that position. She is also Professor of Geography, and formerly Associate Dean of Social Sciences and Chair of the Asian American Studies Department. As UCLA’s senior international officer (SIO), she oversees the university’s global partnerships, leads the International Institute and its 27 research centers and eight degree programs, and champions and promotes international research and education.
Dr. Fan was born in Hong Kong and received her PhD from the Ohio State University and an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Bristol. She has numerous publications on migration, regional development and gender in China, including the pioneering book China on the Move. She contributes to the media frequently, and has delivered numerous keynotes in the U.S., Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa. She has received many research and teaching awards, including the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award, an American Council on Education Fellowship, an Andrew W. Mellon grant, and research grants from the Henry Luce Foundation and National Science Foundation.
