Public Policy 290: Development Economics

Quarter: Winter 2019
Instructor: Natalie Bau Natalie Bau

Why are some countries rich, while other countries are poor? What can policy-makers do to reduce poverty? In this class, we discuss current research on these questions. We will discuss both the methodologies used to answer questions in development economics, like natural experiments and randomized control trials, as well as the relationship between development and institutions, education, growth, culture, and gender. This is a reading intensive, seminar-style course. Students will be expected to read academic articles in economics and actively participate in class discussions. Students will also learn how to use data to evaluate policies.
