Urban Planning 239: Special Topics in Regional and International Development: Latin American Cities Seminar

The diverse cities of Latin America face a wide range of governance challenges. This seminar will survey these challenges through a speaker series and focused attention on topics such as corruption, land use planning, public finance, decentralization, urban indigeneity, and the politics of public service provision. Every week, an invited scholar will discuss readings with the class and give a public research talk on their work. Students will write a term paper based around one of these topics. Scholars come from a variety of universities in the United States and Latin America and conduct research in a number of Latin American countries. The final class will raise the idea of Los Angeles as a Latin American City.
