Urban Planning 229: Special Topics in Planning Methods- Housing Markets and Policy

Students learn about economics of urban housing markets, how variety of government policies (with focus on California housing policies) create and shape housing markets, and some of tools researchers and practitioners use to study and evaluate markets. Topics include housing demand and housing supply, household formation, housing submarkets, housing finance systems, gentrification and neighborhood change, housing elements and fair-share housing laws, and impacts of white-supremacist housing institutions like redlining and single-family zoning. Includes group and individual assignments, and final examination.
