UP 239: Special Topics in Environmental Analysis and Policy: Climate and History: Apocalypse, Then and Now

Quarter: Spring 2020
Instructor: Hecht

Study seeks to explore big history of approaches to global climate change. Students develop working background with central issues by looking at some effects of climate on societies in past, contemporary dynamics, and range of possible approaches--such as climate change avoided (at least so far): nuclear winter. Big climate events in (especially recent) past can help us understand range and kinds of impacts to expect; kinds of politics and policies needed to respond to them; and forms of modeling and scenarios approaches available.
