Skylar was born and raised in Los Angeles. She attended the University of California, Santa Cruz and graduated with a BA in Community Studies with an emphasis in Health Care Inequality. After graduating college, Skylar lived in Whistler, British Columbia for six months were she was surrounded by people from all over the world. After returning to the States, Skylar pursued a career in nonprofit development and management for six years until she decided to attend UCLA to earn her Masters in Social Welfare.
Skylar is currently in her 2nd and final year of the MSW program and a Bohnett Fellow for the 2014-15 year. She works in Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Office of External Affairs to better connect residents with their City government. She is also completing the required courses to receive her Global Public Affairs Certificate in Global Health and Social Services. She believes that the struggle for social justice is global. To truly affect change, one must understand the context of the problems they are trying to fix.
Skylar decided to enter the MSW program to learn how to successfully end the cycle of oppression and subjugation she saw around her. She plans to work with communities to share with them strategies and advocacy skills to bring about the change they want.
