At the U.N., a Shared Commitment to Creating Positive Change

By Hiba Zaidi

Thanks to the Global Public Affairs Program at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs, I had the privilege of participating in a five-day immersion program at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. This unique experience offered valuable insight into the diverse agencies within the United Nations and the critical roles they play in addressing global challenges.

Over the course of the program, participants explored the many ways in which the United Nations serves its member states. We received training in consensus building, conflict resolution, and negotiation, skills that are essential for effective diplomacy and peacemaking. Career development sessions provided a clearer understanding of the various professional pathways within the U.N. system and practical guidance on navigating these roles.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the program was the opportunity to connect with 30 like-minded individuals from around the world, all united by a shared commitment to creating positive change. The program culminated in attending the opening ceremony of the International Youth Conference, where we heard from an inspiring panel of emerging youth leaders and engaged in meaningful networking with fellow aspiring changemakers.

I am deeply grateful to the Global Public Affairs Program for making this opportunity possible, and to UNITAR for providing such an immersive and enriching experience at the United Nations Headquarters.
