Social Welfare 203B – Global Poverty: Theory and Practice

Quarter: Winter 2017
Instructor: Ananya Roy

Theory and methodology study pays close attention to entire texts. Students expected to engage readings through class participation and written response pieces. Each text treated as theoretical framework, empirical accomplishment, and methodological intervention. Students consider central role of poverty knowledge and management in social welfare and urban planning, historicize this understanding of poverty and poverty management, consider ethical frameworks that have shaped responses to poverty and how alternative formulations may be possible, and train students in research methodologies through analysis of each text as methodological template.
